Reporting on an extreme or emotionally loaded proposal creates a basic risk. Repeating the claim can help it spread, even when the article later corrects it. Hiding the claim creates a different risk, because readers cannot understand what political actors are asking the state to do.
Our approach is to make the evidentiary status visible at the same moment as the claim. Context is not a final paragraph. It is part of the label.
Primary documents before commentary
We start with legislation, party programmes, court judgments, administrative guidance, budget documents, official statistics, and the original speech or post. Commentary can identify what to investigate. It cannot substitute for the document that creates a power or records a result.
When no primary document exists, we say so. A speech may still matter as political positioning, but it should not be presented as enacted policy.
Claims receive a status
Quantitative and causal claims will carry one of four working labels:
- Documented: directly supported by a named primary source.
- Estimated: produced from disclosed assumptions and a reproducible method.
- Contested: credible sources reach materially different conclusions.
- Unsupported: no adequate evidence was provided or found.
We separate description from endorsement
A clear account of a proposal is not support for it. A clear account of legal or practical objections is not proof that its political demand will disappear. Readers need both the strongest operational version of a proposal and the strongest evidenced challenge to it.
We will not use euphemism to conceal coercion. We will also not use the most inflammatory interpretation when the policy text supports a narrower one. The target population and mechanism decide the description.
We follow corrections
Research pages will show their publication and update dates. Material corrections will state what changed. When a forecast can be tested against later data, the original forecast remains visible beside the result.
This matters because remigration politics is likely to generate many large promises before institutions can produce measurable outcomes. A publication that remembers only the latest claim becomes part of the campaign cycle. A publication that preserves the record can evaluate it.
The goal is not artificial balance. It is traceable judgment.
Evidence with a clear aim
